• What is Shop Small?

Shop Small celebrates the big things that small business owners do every day to serve their local community.

The campaign works with – and promotes – small businesses and encourages American Express® Cardmembers to use their Card at participating locations. This year, it ran between 3 and 18 December 2016.

Small Business Saturday UK, a grassroots movement that highlights the important role that small businesses play in our community, kicks off Shop Small. This year Small Business Saturday UK took place on Saturday 3 December 2016.

  • Why Shop Small?

There’s nothing quite like the feeling of finding a hidden gem in a small shop; not only do you experience the joy of buying something unique, there’s also the satisfaction that you’re supporting a local business.

What’s more, as an American Express Cardmember you could have been rewarded for supporting your local high street. When you spent £10 or more in a single transaction at a participating small business during the campaign period (3 to 18 December 2016) you could have received a £5 statement credit, a great way to make your money go further in the run up to Christmas.

  • Why is Shop Small important?

As a nation, we love our high streets and the small shops found up and down them. Local shops give where we live a sense of identity and community and contributes billions to our economy. These businesses are the backbone of our high street and Shop Small is our celebration of them.

But of course, small shops need continuous support throughout the year so whilst Shop Small officially ran from 3 to 18 December 2016, remember to visit your local shops often to make a difference.

Together, let’s help our high streets thrive.

  • Why is American Express behind it?

Shop Small was created by American Express for the benefit of our small merchants and Cardmembers. It demonstrates our commitment to small business owners who account for a fifth of UK retail sales annually in the UK. Helping small businesses thrive is fundamental to economic success, has a positive impact on local communities and is a continuation of the support we’ve shown since the inaugural Shop Small campaign in the United States in 2010, which was introduced to celebrate the small businesses that go an extra mile for their customers.

Charlotte Stone, UK General Manager, American Express comments:
“At American Express, we have a long history of supporting small businesses and celebrating their dedication to their customers. In 2016, Shop Small continued this great tradition and we’re delighted that so many Cardmembers took the opportunity to support small businesses up and down the country.”
