Research from American Express revealed the extent of our loyalty to small businesses with shoppers willing to make, on average, a 36 mile round-trip to visit their favourite independent businesses.
With findings released in order to support the Shop Small campaign in 2016, when asked why they are prepared to make a special trip, over half of those questioned cited the personal service (59%) and 49% the specialist knowledge they receive from small business owners as the main reasons. A third (33%) said they know the staff by name and over half (56%) of those interviewed said they would continue to visit their most loved shops even if they moved house.
Singer, TV presenter and American Express Shop Small Ambassador Louise Redknapp regularly makes a 40 mile round trip from her home in Surrey to have her hair cut by hairdresser Billi Currie who runs the independent Billi Currie salon in Marylebone, Central London. Louise says:
“Billi has been cutting my hair for around 20 years and I have to say that, no matter where I live, I’d always travel to his salon. Independents like Billi’s are truly special which is why I wanted to support a campaign that celebrates small businesses across the country.”
